Fernando Torres has spoken candidly in an interview with Spanish newspaper La Razon. The striker recalls his nightmare season of last year and reveals he regards his success with Chelsea and Spain in the last few months as ‘bittersweet’ due to his irregularity in the starting line-ups. The 28-year-old striker even admits that at times last season he would sit on the bench not wanting to come on to the field but he praised the club’s fans for their support and attributed his resilience in his turmoil to the fans’ loyalty to the £50m striker.
Romelu Lukaku has blasted Chelsea for the way he was used last season. The 19-year-old striker made a £20m move to Stamford Bridge from Anderlecht last summer but only featured twelve times during the season. The player revealed that he felt last season was wasted and that he asked new manager Di Matteo for a move away from the club on the first day of pre-season. Di Matteo tried to convince the player to remain at Chelsea – who now only have Torres and Sturridge up front – but was unsuccessful in his persuasion and Lukaku now hopes his loan move to West Brom will revitalise his career.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has accused Chelsea of ‘messing around’ with Victor Moses. Wigan are reportedly seeking £9m up front but Chelsea have attempted to manipulate the fee by offering payment in installations and add-ons. Whelan described Chelsea’s negotiations as uncharacteristic and underlined that Moses will only be sold should Wigan’s valuation be met. Wigan, though, have seemingly signed replacements for Moses in new arrivals Miyachi and Koné.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech and former player Didier Drogba have both ranked in UEFA’s top 10 players in Europe for the 2011/12 season. The Best Player Award between Iniesta, Messi and Ronaldo will be decided on 30 August when the draw is made for the Champions League group stages but Didier Drogba was voted in 7th and Cech was voted in 8th for their contribution in Chelsea’s eventual Champions League win.
The FA have assured anti-racism campaigners that the racism trial involving John Terry will be subject to an independent regulatory process and that any verdict will not be influenced by neither England manager Roy Hodgson or the chairman of the FA. This declaration comes after Roy Hodgson revealed he hopes John Terry would be cleared of the racism charge so that he would be able to play for England once more.
Nottingham Forest have signed Chelsea defender Sam Hutchinson on a six month loan deal. The 23-year-old made two first team appearances last season in his first full-season back from an initial career ending injury. Chelsea are now expected to step up their search for a new right-back before the close of the transfer window.
Ramires has warned new signing and compatriot Oscar of the initiation ceremony that awaits him at Chelsea. Although the deal for Oscar was completed two weeks ago, he has yet to train with the club due to participation in the Olympics and international duty this week. Ramires told the 20-year-old that he would have to sing a song in front of his new teammates as is customary for new arrivals at Stamford Bridge. Ramires was speaking whilst on international duty with Brazil along with Oscar and David Luiz.
