Sir Alex Ferguson (United's Coach) is without the his key-players and experienced trio of Giggs, Scholes and Carrick for Manchester United's Champions League visit to Romanian champions Cluj.
The three midfielders have not travelled with their team-mates for Tuesday's match as United look to build on their 1-0 win against Galatasaray on their first European outing of the season and avoid a second successive group-stage exit.
While Giggs, Scholes and Carrick are staying at home, Jonny Evans, who suffered a dead leg in added time of Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Tottenham, has recovered and is in the 21-man party, while Darren Fletcher, who made his first start for 10 months against Newcastle last week, could be in line to begin a second game.
"Michael did not report today. He is in bed with a virus,'' said Ferguson. The United boss also confirmed veteran wide-man Giggs left training this morning after also feeling unwell, while Scholes was not considered due to the exertion of completing the full 90 minutes in Saturday's game.
"Ryan had a bit of a virus this morning,'' said Ferguson. "He was feeling a bit rough so we sent him home. Paul Scholes played ever so well on Saturday but he is 37 now and we couldn't expect him to play three days later at his age.''
With Carrick absent, the only cover for centre-backs Evans and Rio Ferdinand comes from youngsters Scott Wootton and Michael Keane, who both made their first United starts in last Wednesday's Capital One Cup victory over Newcastle.
Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are all injured while wingers Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are also absent. The United party includes five more inexperienced players in goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and midfielder Jesse Lingard, who are yet to make their debuts, the versatile Ryan Tunnicliffe, who has appeared once, and summer signings Nick Powell and Alexander Buttner.
